The Other Half

Commissioned by Horizon Theatre Company for the 2024 New South Young Playwrights Festival

13-year-old Joanie and 23-year-old Mariana reunite for the first time since their family’s deepest secret was revealed: they are half sisters. After their shared father’s funeral, Joanie goes looking for Mariana, who is hiding in her childhood bedroom in a misguided attempt to find solace in her dad’s old voicemails. Resentment and yearning threaten to ruin everything as the two attempt to share a plate of link sausages. A five-minute play packed with themes of innocence, sisterhood, and regret, The Other Half explores the similarities between two young women who have suddenly found family in one another. Will they welcome this new bond, or will they let their differences divide them?
